AMD’s Socket M2 To Simplify Next-Generation CPU

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to simplify its 90nm CPU platform with its 940-pin Socket M2 CPU design, according to motherboard makers. As Intel schedules to unify desktop PC- and notebook-use processors in the second half of 2006, AMD is looking to standardize a full CPU line for entry-level, middle-range and high-end segments, indicated the makers.

AMD Taiwan declined to comment on the report.

AMD’s Socket M2 CPU line will originally target the high-end market, the makers said, noting that the chip vendor has informed them that the 940-pin platform will also be released for the mainstream and entry-level segments next year. AMD is now delivering samples of the next-generation CPU to its downstream customers, the makers added. During the platform migration, products that support the new Socket M2 and the old Socket 939 and 754 will still be on the market by the end of 2006, according to motherboard makers. The makers expect that AMD’s CPU standardization will help reduce production and handling costs.
